  • July 6, 1957 Althea Gibson became the first black person to win the British tennis championship at Wimbleton.

  • July 10, 1865 Birth of Mary McLeod Bethune, founder of the National Council of Negro Women.
  • July 19, 1848 Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott launched the first women's rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York.
